Congratulations to the following CMDB Faculty who received honors for 2008-2009:

Dr. Anthony W. Norman, member of CMDB and former Program Director, was elected as chair of the UCR Academic Senate for the 2008

Dr. Eugene A. Nothnagel, CMDB member and Professor of Plant Physiology, was named a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science: "For distinguished leadership in plant science research related to signaling, development and structure of the plant cell wall and for outstanding teaching service to students."

Dr. Alexander Raikhel, member of CMDB and Professor of Entomology,  was elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences for his excellence in original scientific research.

Dr. Anandasankar Ray, CMDB member and Assistant Professor of Entomology, received a $100,000 Grand Challenges Explorations grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant will support an innovative global health research project entitled "Novel Class of Long-Range Olfactory Repellents for Anopheles."

Dr. Jian-Kang Zhu, CMDB member and Professor of Plant Cell Biology was ranked the nation's top plant scientist based on references to his research.  His articles received more than 5400 citations in the last decade.

Student Accomplishments

Brian Brady completed his Ph.D. and graduated in Fall 2008.

Karthikeyani Chellappa completed her Ph.D. and graduated in Winter 2009.

Amandeep Kahlon has been invited to present a paper on his research at the 5th International Congress of the Society for Vector Ecology which will be held from Oct 11-16, 2009 in Antalya, Turkey.  He has also been selected to co-organize and co-host the two graduate student symposia being held at the Congress.

Stephen Karr completed his Ph.D. and graduated in Fall 2008.

Sabrina Lin presented her stem cell work at two international conferences (the First World Congress on Reproductive Biology and the annual meetings of the International Society for Stem Cell Research). She also won an award from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine for an image of human embryonic stem cell colonies; this image was featured in a poster at the annual meetings of CIRM and subsequently appeared in a CIRM calendar. She published her first paper on stem cell biology in the journal Human Reproduction and one of her plates appeared on the cover of the journal. She also made a television appearance to discuss her work on stem cells.

Maneesh Mathur completed his Ph.D. and graduated in Fall 2008.

Geoffrey Shouse completed his Ph.D. and graduated in Winter 2009.

Tuong "John" Ta completed his Ph.D. and graduated in Spring 2009.

Hongwei Yuan completed his Ph.D. and graduated in Summer 2008.

Maria Zoudilova completed her Ph.D. and graduated in Summer 2008.
